| This project posed some interesting challenges (besides the obvious ones of making something out of such irregular materials). The stairs led up to the second floor mezzanine. Supporting the floor was a girder with a joint in the middle of it. This was originally supported by a post directly below the joint. Spiral stairs meant having to place a post off to one side so that the top stair tread would be in the correct location. The problem was that half of the main girder would no longer be supported. I finally found a fallen locust tree that would work: straight, with a fork to one side at the perfect height. This large branch forking off to the side falls directly under the girder joint thus supporting the other half of it. |
